NINE SQUARE INCHES is a collection of small illustrations in tiny squares created by enormous talents. Each piece measures about 5″×5″, but the active art space is limited to just 3″×3″ (7.62cm × 7.62cm)—the size of a Post-it note.
The idea began in 1998 at San Diego Comic-Con, where I met Paul Pope. He drew the image you see here on the left: a lone traveler resting with a walking stick across his lap, perched at the edge of a cliff, pausing to take in the view before continuing his journey. I was struck by how much story and atmosphere he captured within such a small space. Inspired, I set out to challenge other artists to work within the same constraints. Thank you for visiting Nine Square Inches. I hope you enjoy exploring these concentrated bursts of creativity as much as I’ve enjoyed curating them. |
